When your wants become your needs!
On April 8th, 2016, God asked me a question that I will never forget. I remember his question to this day, because my Creator had never before asked me anything like it. At the time of God’s question, I was sitting at a table in a beautiful restaurant in Hilton Head, South Carolina, named “CQ’s.” My husband and I had just finished eating a fabulous meal with our good friends. As I was sitting at the table, I turned my head to look at a waiter who walked into the room. As my head was turned towards the waiter, God asked me very clearly, “WHAT DO YOU WANT?”
When I heard God’s question, I was actually quite surprised by it. I quickly noticed that God didn’t ask me “What do you NEED?” Instead he asked me, “What do you WANT?” You see, needs are just that…needs. But wants…now they are something entirely different. Needs are things of necessity, things you can’t live without, whereas wants are desires beyond necessity. Your wants often make life easier or more enjoyable, but, as we all know, you can live without them.
So, because I felt the urgent need to answer God's question, I removed myself from my husband and friends by retreating to the restaurant bathroom, so that I could ponder God’s question. While sitting in the bathroom stall (you do what you have to do to get alone time), over and over I asked myself, “What do I WANT?...What do I WANT?"
Well it didn’t take long for me to know exactly what I wanted. Very quickly, my response to God rolled off my tongue…
I WANT to have an intimate relationship with you.
I WANT EVERYTHING that the Holy Spirit has to offer me.
I WANT to SEE, HEAR, FEEL, TASTE, and SMELL your majestic voice.
I WANT to SEE your GLORY pass me by.
I WANT to be used BY you FOR your Kingdom purposes.
I WANT to SEE your angels.
I WANT to SEE the Kingdom of God.
I WANT to have a personal encounter with Jesus, either in a dream or vision.
I WANT Jesus to personally tell me my mission in life.
I WANT Jesus to teach me all that I need to know.
I WANT to be used by you to bring Heaven to Earth.
After spewing out ALL of my desires, I realized, “Wow, I have quite a list of WANTS.” I wondered if I had asked God for too much; if I had gone too far in my requests. However, immediately upon exiting the bathroom, I saw a sign on a table that read “AAA Approved! Diamond Rated!” Knowing that “AAA” represents the highest level, best in class, or highest quality, I knew that God highly APPROVED of my WANTS.
On our way back to our condo, as I was pondering all that had just taken place, I suspected that God knew what my answer would be, before he even asked me his question! That may be why he asked me this particular question in the first place. I concluded that my WANTS match up perfectly with what God NEEDS me to have, in order to be a compelling witness for his kingdom. What I expressed as WANTS was actually God’s WILL for my life. That’s why he approved my requests upon exiting the bathroom. My answer was diamond rated in his eyes!
Of course Yahweh wants me to have an intimate relationship with him. His greatest desire, above all else, is to have a personal, unconditional, loving relationship with me. That’s why he sent his son, Jesus, to die on the cross for my sins. God also wants me to have EVERYTHING that his Holy Spirit has to offer me, or he wouldn’t have sent his Spirit to live inside of me in the first place. In fact, he wants ALL of my senses to be awakened to his presence so that we can communicate with one another, through his Holy Spirit. Through clear communication, he knows he can instruct me on how he wants to use me for his Kingdom purposes. Through intimate communication, he knows his daily will for my life will become known. God knows that he NEEDS my help to save those who are drowning and lost around me, therefore he WANTS me to hear and see his voice regularly. And off course God wants me to see his angels, or signs of his angels, because he knows that his angels co-labor with his children to accomplish his Kingdom purposes. Furthermore, he wants me to SEE his Kingdom, because his Kingdom became my new home on the day I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Finally, because I am a child of God, he knows that a personal encounter with Jesus will just further our intimate relationship, and give me an even greater desire to follow in Jesus’s footsteps. You see my WANTS are truly God’s NEEDS for me to be an effective witness for his kingdom, so that Heaven can be brought to Earth!
As a bonus for WANTING the things of the Kingdom of God, God knows, because he has promised it, that all of my own NEEDS will be met as well. Jesus told his disciples, “SEEK the Kingdom of God ABOVE ALL ELSE, and he [God] will give you everything you NEED.” (Luke 12:31) What I have personally experienced, by seeking the Kingdom of God over the years, is an abundant life that is full of adventure, purpose, excitement, peace that passes all understanding, unconditional love from my Heavenly Father, and overwhelming joy. I can personally testify that ALL of my needs have been met, above and beyond what I could ever imagined, just by seeking the Kingdom of God first.
God desperately wants all of his children to seek HIM and his son JESUS above all else. He desires this for you, as a child of God, because he knows the abundant gifts, blessings, and treasures that will fall upon you if you do. For God promises that when you give all of yourself to him, the windows of heaven will be opened, and he will pour down an overflowing blessing upon you. (Malachi 3:10) So please don’t wait any longer! God so wants to bless you with the best he has to offer, if you first sacrifice yourself to him.
Just as you can live life without your fleshly wants, you can also live life without the things of God’s Kingdom. But why would you, when you don’t have to? As a child of Yahweh, ALL of his KINGDOM RESOURCES are available to you to have and behold. If you decide that you want to live with ALL that God WANTS you to have, it is guaranteed your life will become exponentially abundant.
When God asked me, “What do you want?” I was dining in a restaurant called “CQ’s.” The letters CQ are a code used by wireless operators, particularly those communicating in Morse code, but also by voice operators to make a general call, called a “CQ call.” Transmitting the letters CQ on a particular radio frequency is an invitation for any operators listening on that frequency to respond. On this particular night, because I had for years been seeking out exactly how a child of God can see and hear God’s majestic voice, I heard God’s call very clearly. Therefore, when I heard his question, there was no doubt in my mind who had just asked it. And because I heard God’s call, I was able to respond. And respond I did! Furthermore, because God approved of my wants, I know with certainty that ALL of them will one day be bestowed upon me.
Over the centuries, I shutter to think how many people never responded to God when he asked them this very same question, simply because they never heard his question. I wonder how many blessing have not granted to God’s children, simply because they were never taught to hear God’s majestic voice, through the myriad ways in which he speaks. So if you do not know how to hear or see God’s voice, I highly recommend that you make it a priority in your life today. Do not let another day go by without seeking out God’s magnificent voice. Do what you need to do to find it. For you do not want to miss out on God’s extravagant wants for your life! What you will discover is that God’s WANTS for your life are actually NECESSITIES!
