PRACTICE YOUR PRAYER LANGUAGE!
On July 24th, 2019 my pastor touched my arm, looked me directly in my eyes, and said, “Practice your prayer language.” I replied, “Yes, I pray in my prayer language often. We often pray over people in our prayer ministry in this way.” And yet, only moments later, my pastor repeated the exact same words to me, while once again looking directly into my eyes. He said, “Practice your prayer language.” I had the thought, “Did he not hear what I just said to him?”
It took me a while, but I finally realized that because my pastor said the same thing to me more than once, in a matter of moments, it probably wasn’t my pastor, but Yahweh, who was asking me to practice my “prayer language,” or what some people call “speaking in tongues.” So I took note of my pastor’s persistent request, even though it was confusing to me.
To practice means, “to carry out or perform a particular activity habitually or regularly.” The purpose of performing an activity repeatedly, over and over and over again, is so that you can improve or maintain one’s proficiency in whatever you are practicing.
You see, I had been practicing my prayer language, ever since I had received the gift of speaking in tongues years prior. So what exactly was my heavenly Father telling me to do?
It wasn’t until July 29th, while driving in the car, that I decided to do what God was asking me to do. I needed to pray for two of my boys, so instead of praying out loud in English, I decided instead to practice my prayer language, while focusing my mind on my boys needs.
As I was quietly praying out loud, knowing that speaking in tongues is a personal prayer language, I had the thought there might come a time when I might want to be comfortable praying in my prayer language loudly for others to hear. So instead of praying quietly, while in the privacy of my own car, I decided to raise my voice so that my voice could be clearly heard.
Am I ever so glad that I practiced my prayer language LOUDLY on that day in my car. Because at 1:00 a.m., that very night, my husband and I were awakened to what sounded like fireworks, right outside of our bedroom. When my husband looked out the window, my husband saw that our neighbor’s roof was completely engulfed in fire. The flames were already burning 10 feet into the air, above the roof, and spreading quickly. It was the most horrific sight I have ever seen. Immediately panic set in.
After first calling 911, then ensuring that our elderly neighbor had made it out of her burning home, and finally notifying the neighbor on the other side of what was taking place, I went to battle praying in my prayer language, OUT LOUD, for all to hear.
All I can say is that as soon as I opened my mouth, an unknown language exploded out of me that I have never heard spoken before. Even though I didn't know what I was saying, I knew that I was powerfully calling upon all of heaven’s resources to contain the neighbor’s house-fire, before it spread to our house and to the neighbor’s house on the other side. I’m sure I was asking my Heavenly Father to send both physical and supernatural resources as soon as possible.
While speaking in tongues, I found myself pacing back and forth, at the top of our driveway. It was as if I was in a courtroom, pleading my case before a judge and jury. I knew without a doubt that I was in spiritual warfare with the enemy, thwarting his plans for complete destruction, because of the way and the tone with which the words, of an unknown language, spilled out of my mouth.
After praying for a very long time in this manner, I stopped pacing and noticed, for the first time, how calm the winds were. If fact, I realized that there was absolutely no wind. The night was completely still. Because of the lack of wind, the flames from the neighbor’s roof were shooting straight up, and not catching the trees between our houses on fire.
Soon after this, the fire department arrived and after several hours, the fire was completely extinguished.
It wasn’t until the next day, that I looked up the definition of “practice” and found several interesting synonyms that shed more light on what had just taken place. Synonyms of the word practice are, “rehearse, run through, go through, go over, work on, work at, repeat, polish, refine, drill, perfect, and exercise.”
The word “exercise” jumped out at me. I realized that what I did, on the night of our neighbor’s fire, was to “EXERCISE” my gift from my heavenly Father, for my own family’s, and my neighbor’s benefit.
What God also placed in my mind is that since I didn’t know what I was praying for in my car, the afternoon before the fire, I have no idea what the Holy Spirit prayed on my behalf. The Holy Spirit may have finished praying for my boys, and went on to praying for the physical winds to be silenced on that very night, so that our house would not burn down. Or maybe the Holy Spirit prayed that our elderly neighbor would be able to get of her house safely, before the fire engulfed her.
I will never know what the Holy Spirit prayed, but I have no doubt that “practicing my prayer language” is what kept our house from being consumed by fire.
What I know is that speaking in tongues is VERY powerful. In fact, I have a few more powerful testimonies of praying in my prayer language, including one that I know saved my son’s life from physical death. Perhaps that’s another blog for another day.
Because speaking in tongues is a mystery that can not be truly understood and explained, we have to take the Apostle Paul’s words as truth, “For one who speaks in a tongue SPEAKS not to men but TO GOD; for no one understands him, BUT he utters mysteries in the Spirit…He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…” (1Corinthians 14:2,4).
So even though speaking in tongues may seem weird and crazy, because you have no idea what you are praying, we have to remember whom the gift comes from. God would not give us a gift from heaven that wasn’t beneficial to us. According to Paul’s words, speaking in tongues will strengthen and empower you and can be used to fight and defeat the enemy in your life. It is a language that God once said to me is both pleasing, and music, to his ears.
In fact, Paul wished that ALL believers spoke in tongues, and at the same time thanked God that he spoke in tongues more than anyone (1 Corinthians 14:5,18). Why would Paul thank God for the gift of speaking in tongues, if it wasn’t beneficial? He wouldn’t. Paul confidently knew that when he spoke in tongues, Yahweh’s Holy Spirit within him was praying the perfect prayer for his current needs and circumstances.
As believers we don’t have to know exactly how speaking in tongues works, in order to believe, or to use this gift! All we have to know is that speaking in tongues is a gift that comes from the Holy Spirit, because Scripture tells us that it does. We need to trust our heavenly Father that he has our best interest at heart.
It is actually very freeing to know when you run out of words, in your prayer time with the Lord, or you simply don’t know what to pray, that you can allow the Holy Spirit to pray for you through your own mouth. It’s like he take’s over your prayer, your conversation, with your heavenly Father for you.
It is said that there is “power” in the tongue. James 3:10 says, “From the same mouth come blessing and cursing,” which means the words that come from your tongue on a daily basis will either tear down or build up. As powerful as the tongue is, I know that when I willingly give my tongue over to Yahweh’s Holy Spirit within me, and let him speak through me in my prayer language, I can be assured that only powerful blessings will be spoken over me, out of my own mouth, to my Heavenly Father! When I speak in tongues I confidently know that I am praying God’s perfect WILL for my life.
If you believe that Yahweh is capable of raising the dead to life, as he did Jesus for our eternal salvation, then surely you can believe that when we give the Holy Spirit within us permission to use our voice, HE can speak directly to our heavenly Father on our behalf. Only Yahweh’s Holy Spirit within us knows exactly what to pray in any circumstance, for the most favorable results.
So EXERCISE your prayer language often, proactively practicing it. Become proficient in speaking in tongues, because I guarantee there will be a time in your life you will desperately need it. For you do not know when, where, or in what circumstance you will desire to use it. If you make praying in your prayer language a daily habit, know that when a situation arises that requires prayer, the Holy Spirit within you may have already prayed prayers for this exact situation days prior … unbeknownst to you. What a gift speaking in tongues truly is.
If you don’t currently have the gift of speaking in tongues, I suggest that you educate yourself further on this incredible gift, through what is written in the Bible about it, and through the many books that are written on this subject. Or you can contact our ministry, and we can personally pray with you to receive this gift.
For Paul tells us to earnestly desire the higher gifts (1 Corinthians 12:31). I believe that speaking in tongues is one of those gifts.
So don’t wait any longer. Tell your heavenly Father that you earnestly desire the precious and powerful gift of speaking in tongues, and then expect to receive it. For it is a perfect season for Yahweh to bless you with a perfect Heavenly Gift, that will not only bless you this year, but for the rest of your life!
