ARE YOU A GIANT OR A GRASSHOPPER?

On February 10, 2015, I had a dream that I was standing next to a wall being measured by someone. I said to the person measuring me, "I NEED to know EXACTLY how tall I am!" Immediately after saying this, I was looking at myself being measured, as if I was a third person in the room. My eyes were hyper focused on the tape measure against the wall. All I could see was a close up of the numbers on the tape measure. My eyes first zeroed in on the 5-foot mark. After it became obvious that I was much taller than 5 feet, my eyes quickly ascended up the tape measure past the 6 foot…7 foot…8 foot marks. When it registered with me that my height was WAY beyond 8 feet, I took my eyes off of the tape measure and instead looked directly into my own eyes. They were very BIG and very BLUE. While looking into my own blue eyes, I realized I didn’t see EXACTLY how tall I was, even though I thought I needed to know this fact. Instead, without a doubt, I knew that I WAS A GIANT.

When I opened my Bible that day, Yahweh drew me to the story of the 12 Israelite leaders sent out by Moses for 40 days to scout out the Promised Land that God had promised his people. While reading this story I saw that Moses had very specific instructions for these men. He wanted them to gather many facts about the land, in order to evaluate if they were capable of POSSESSING it.

Moses told his 12 spies, “Go up … and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there is wood in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” (Numbers 13:17-20)

After 40 days, the spies did indeed bring back the FACTS about the land. Not only did they discover that the land flows with milk and honey, but also the fruit of the land was oh so abundant. However, there was one problem. There were also giants! Ten of the twelve spies said to Moses, “We came to the land to which you sent us; it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Yet the people who dwell in the land are strong and the cities are fortified and very large, and besides, we saw the descendants of Anak [GIANTS] there…” (Numbers 13:27-28)

But Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once, and occupy it; for we are WELL ABLE to overcome it.” (Numbers 13:30)

The other ten men continued, “We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we…The land, through which we have gone, to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature…and we seemed to ourselves like GRASSHOPPERS, and so we seemed to them.” (Numbers 13:31-33)

Joshua and Caleb, who believed that they were more than qualified to possess the Promised Land, continued by saying to the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an EXCEEDINGLY GOOD LAND. If Yahweh delights in us, he will BRING us into this land and GIVE it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey. (Numbers 14:7-8)

So why were Caleb and Joshua so positive when the majority of the spies seemed so pessimistic about the situation? The facts were the facts. Nothing could change the facts. There were giants in the land that were strong, who lived in large fortified cities. BUT, what made the difference is how the spies looked at the facts. Joshua and Caleb placed great value on the fact that God was on their side. They considered the fact that God had just delivered them from slavery in the land of Egypt. Because of this fact, they believed that God would not let them be defeated by the people in the Promised Land, after all that God had already done for them. They also believed there would be fulfillment of what God had promised Abraham, that his descendants would live in the Promised Land. By believing that God was on their side, and by knowing they had access to heavenly resources, Caleb and Joshua knew without a doubt that the giants they saw could be easily defeated.

On the other hand, I believe the other ten spies looked at the giants from a slave mentality, even though God had recently freed them from slavery by completely defeating their Egyptian enemy through miracles, signs and wonders. These men saw themselves as grasshoppers, and because they saw themselves as grasshoppers, they knew that the enemy would see them as grasshoppers also. The problem with these men is they saw themselves through their own eyes. They saw themselves as mere humans with human capabilities. They imagined themselves to be the size of insects, capable of being easily squashed by the giant’s feet. They did not consider that God would help them defeat the giants in the same way he defeated the Egyptians that had kept them in slavery for centuries.

Because the Israelites believed the report of these ten spies, the entire nation walked in the wilderness for 40 years. In addition, the men who were alive during this time, except Joshua and Caleb, never experienced the Promised Land, because they all died before that time. Because of their unbelief, these men walked in a barren land for the rest of their days. When Joshua finally led the next generation of Israelites into the Promised Land, with God by their side, they successfully conquered the giants of the land.

Now, if you are a believer, the day you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior is the day you entered the Promised Land of abundance. On that very day you were given the right as a son or daughter of Yahweh to move out of your wilderness and move into HIS Promised Land. So why may it seem to some of you like you are still wandering in the wilderness of life. It’s probably because you haven’t yet addressed the giants in your life currently residing there with you.

So what are your giants? What is holding you back from taking possession of your inheritance of peace, love, joy, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, patience, self-control, purpose, and communication with your heavenly Father? What is so tall in your life that you seem like a grasshopper in comparison? What giants are keeping you in your wilderness: addictions, anger, fear of the known or the unknown, sins, your past, doubt, unbelief, unforgiveness, traumas, illness, depression, anxiety, finances, etc? What are the facts of your Promised Land that cannot be denied? You may have to ask God in order to answer this question. You may have to ask God to help you gather the facts of your Promised Land, so as to identify your personal giants and strongholds.

What is interesting about my dream is that the color of my physical eyes are BROWN, not BLUE. So the fact that I had blue eyes in my dream is significant. Biblically the color blue represents the living waters of the Holy Spirit flowing through you. So in my dream, my blue eyes represent my spiritual “Holy Spirit eyes,” which means that I was looking at myself through the eyes of the Holy Spirit when I realized that I was way over 8 feet tall. Upon waking from this dream God clearly said, “ALL of my children are GIANTS, because they have the power of MY HOLY SPIRIT, given in JESUS’ NAME living within them!”

By having Yahweh’s Holy Spirit within us, who can stop us? If you see yourself the way God sees you, as a child of the Most High King, as a Kingdom Giant, then you will not only live, but also thrive in the Promised Land that God has for you. You will successfully overcome and defeat all the worldly giants that are currently before you, because you will have access to God’s strategic advice, HIS heavenly resources, and HIS angel warriors, who will fight alongside you. In contrast, if you see yourself as a grasshopper, you will live like a grasshopper and you will die wandering in your wilderness, where the land is extremely dry and unable to produce an abundant life.

So ask God today to show you and to convince you just exactly how tall you really are through the eyes of HIS HOLY SPIRIT within you! Then be strong and of good courage, be not frightened, neither be dismayed by your personal giants. Remember, Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go!
