My spirit gasps every time I read verse 11! The thought of grieving God, and even further the thought of having God decree I will NEVER enter into the calming rest of His Spirit!! I honestly couldn't imagine living a single day without the calming rest of God''s Spirit. These people had seen & experienced the mighty works of God and still had major unbelief! As you can see I have digested these verses many times. It's the very next verse I hold onto, because it is telling us exactly what we need to do to not grieve God's heart and how to stay in God's calming rest of His Spirit. Unbelief hides, unbelief is a killer, it can lead you astray and ultimately leave you unresponsive to the living God !!! So this means that God could be speaking to you, showing you something, trying to lead you somewhere or loving you in some way and because of your unbelief you have zero response to the life and love He is trying to give to you! This is HUGE!!! Unbelief hardens our hearts to where God is knocking but can't get in. It's easy to think, "This isn't me", but let's be real with ourselves. There is a reason, in verse 12, it tells us to search our hearts every day to make sure we do not have evil or unbelief hiding within us. With each day comes many words, through our own thoughts, reading, and listening to other people. It's what we do with these words that matter! The concept is simple really, but also so significant to the wellness of our spirit, soul & body. We must discern whether the words flying around us is Truth or lie, and whether we receive them into ourselves or not. I could go in so many directions here, but going to stick with unbelief. It's the unbelief to God's Truth that hardens our hearts and makes us unresponsive to the living God! No matter how spiritual we think we are or knowledgeable we are of the scriptures, we can NEVER come to a place where we think we could never have unbelief within ourselves. We are to search ourselves daily to make sure that what we have received into ourselves is actually Truth and not a lie that we are believing as Truth. God said to me, "What you believe is where you release power!" I don't know about you but this gives me a huge motivation to search myself every day to make sure that what I am believing is the Truth and only the Truth! In verse 15 it says,"If only today you would listen to his voice . Don't make him angry by hardening your hearts..." And how do we harden our hearts to God? Through unbelief! It could be, you don't believe you can hear God's voice, or maybe you don't trust what you are hearing in the way you are hearing it. One thing I know is God speaks in unlimited ways and we only limit God with our own beliefs or unbelief's. In my experiences, God has spoken through, His Word, He speaks directly to me on a regular, through colors, numbers, nature, dreams, visions and through other people. In verses 16-19 it tells us the people that had been delivered from bondage and brought out of Egypt were the ones that heard and still rebelled. This blows my mind!! These people had seen miracles, signs & wonders, they had heard God's voice directly and still didn't believe Him! They grieved God for forty years by wrapping themselves in their unbelief and dropped dead in the wilderness, never to enter into His calming place of rest and never to enter into their inheritance! So let's look at this for a moment and apply it to our own lives. We too have been delivered from bondage, right? And in verse 14 it states, we are mingled with the Messiah and if only today you would listen to His voice. This verse is clearly saying, you can hear God's voice, but are you listening and believing His voice or are you rebelling, disobeying and wrapping yourselves in unbelief? Through your unbelief you could be keeping yourself from receiving your inheritance and not allowing yourself to enter into God's calming rest of His Spirit! I pray that you will open your heart to these verses in Hebrews 3 and search yourself every day . I pray that today you will listen to God's voice, know it, obey it & believe it! In Jesus name, amen!
